EUGENE MOUNTAIN RESCUE

South Side Mt Hood

Saturday May 10th, 2008 Trip Report

After much weather analysis the decision was made and we left Eugene at 1830 on Friday, May 10th with 3 vehicles. "Refreshed" by a quick nap in the noisy Timberline parking lot the ten of us began the trudge up the Palmer Snow Field at 0240 on Saturday morning. The stars were out, the winds were calm and the Mountain fully visible when we left. Not for long...

By daybreak at the top of the Magic Mile Chairlift the winds had picked up and the clouds were rolling in. Maikey, Ahjah and I decided to stay on the planned West Crater Route while the rest of the group switched over to the Standard Route. Radio communication was maintained between the two groups. With low visibility and rain turning to freezing rain above the Palmer Snowfield the Standard Route group decided to call it a day and headed down the mountain. With Maryanne's approval and Maikey's excellent guidance we proceeded carefully around Crater Rock and up to a very windy and cold summit. The downclimb was uneventful via the Hogsback and Standard Route and we arrived at the parking lot to meet Don McLaughlin at 1230. After "debriefing" at the Mt Hood Brewing Co the three of us made the long drive back to Eugene, arriving around 1730.
