Trip Report:
Most of the participants left Eugene on Saturday morning under threatening skies. With thunderstorms in the forecast and heavy rain showers during the drive up to Timberline it looked like it would be a soggy weekend practice. Turning the last corner into the Timberline parking area the gray skies turned to sunshine and we ended up having nearly flawless weather. Day one practice was on the "simulated glacier" just above the lodge, practicing various anchors, belays, and hauling systems. Day two started early with the two hour trudge to 8,200' to access the real crevasses of the White River Glacier. With 3 belay stations set up, each rope team was able to run three "rescues" with everyone getting a chance to be the "victim" over the edge. A separate belay rope made this quite safe. This was my first experience actually in a crevasse and after the trepidation of jumping over the lip it was actually quite enjoyable and starkly beautiful. I learned a lot, had a very enjoyable time and am looking forward to seeing some photos from other members. -Roy
