Trip Report: This trip was originally scheduled as an Obsidian cross-country ski trip but recent warm weather and a lack of fresh snow (despite weather forecasts) compelled us to use snowshoes on this loop. Actual conditions were not too bad, especially above about 5,500' where we encountered some firm fresh snow and warm sunshine (& two XC skiers headed up Redtop Mountain). The icy patches that we encountered in the trees during the descent to the snowpark validated our decision to use the foot paddles. This was a stellar day in the backcountry. Upon our return to Eugene we learned that the valley remained shrouded in fog all day and much colder than the mountains. Many thanks to Brian for the excellent leading on a very enjoyable winter trip.
