Trip Report:
When I first hiked up The South Sister in 1994 I noticed the rock windbreaks on the summit and thought it would be fun to spend the night on Oregon's third highest peak. 15 years later I finally did it. I had to delay the start of the trip by one day due to snow and high winds from a vigorous cold front that brought rain to the Eugene Celebration the previous weekend. A four hour slog from Devil's Lake put me on top at 16:00, just as the last of the day hikers were leaving. I then had the mountain to myself for 14 hours. It might have been a more "zen" experience if not for the incessant winds that sand blasted me even behind the rock wall all night. My new bivy bag worked great and I was able to watch the ISS and shuttle Discovery pass over only a few degrees apart on Tuesday night. An uneventful return via Green Lakes on Wednesday capped off an excellent solo adventure.
